Modeling without analysis is like running obstacles blindfolded
We have numerous tools to analyze the quality of a model. Clash detection, code checking, and rule set are not secondary aspects in the BIM process, and cannot be taken into consideration once the project has already started. Although the UNI 11337 - part 5 (Italian standard) emphasizes the importance of verification in coordinating models, I often see a design focused on modeling authoring tools and not on verification ones. It is essential to plan times and methods of analysis by trying to spread the controls with periodic activities integrated in the design. We must aim for effective interventions in order not to slow down the flow and therefore, right from the preliminary stages, an analysis system must be designed and customizable for each project but which requires times and methods that are not too complex. I try to schematize some aspects on which I focus when I structure a model analysis plan:
It will also be necessary to structure an interference matrix that takes into account the previous scheme and which identifies targeted times and methods of verification.
I want to emphasize that this use of the model cannot stem the modeling skills of a Bim Specialist but should help control the quality of information and design choices.
This video is intended as a starting point for practical reflection to focus on the numerous tools available for creating an analysis flow integrated into the design. There are numerous plug-ins and software that use bubbles (as BIM Track) and that can effectively help us resolve errors. Regardless of the tool used, the important thing is to always find and test an effective method to reduce control and correction times.
Specifically in this video, I created a script with Dynamo for Revit that allowed me to find all the interferences for each information model without having to go through the "SwitchBack”.
The generated bubbles acquire not only the position but also the information content extrapolated from Navisworks XML
Within Revit, fill in a quantity schedule with all the interference information.
Apply filters based on the research groups carried out
Inserts URL links of clash images and reports
Finally approve the corrections by making the interference bubble disappear. The points I highlighted are necessary to bring the attention on the quality of the information models and their designs.
